During the second season of HBO’s Umbre, we were tasked with creating a teaser that had a graphic novel/film noir aesthetic, with the camera moving through a series of freeze frames. To begin the project, we sketched out some initial concepts and then reimagined and drew the shots using live action references. The animation involved moving the camera through various layout elements that were scattered in a 3D space. Additionally, we used a combination of compositing effects, frame by frame animation, and overlaying live footage on top of the graphics to animate the rain, blood, speed lines, and smoke. Overall, the end result was a teaser that successfully captured the moody and stylish atmosphere of the show.
